RADIO presenter Chilli M, who has publicly admitted his addiction to alcohol, is now devoting his time to changing lives.

Presenter of Nethezeka on Ukhozi FM with Mroza Buthelezi, Chilli M shocked all and sundry when he announced during his radio show that he was going to die.

He stopped drinking liquor last month after doctors warned him that he would not live much longer if he continued. He was told liquor had damaged his liver.

He said he consulted a doctor after being troubled by painful feet. "I thought I had gout but the doctor said I was lacking vitamin B, because my liver was damaged," Chilli M said. "I had no choice. I took the step (to stop drinking) because I am a father now. It's no longer about me. I don't want other people to commit the same mistakes as me. I have messed up in my life.

"No other DJ has been fired from radio like me. All this happened because of my drinking problem. I want to encourage those who drink to do it responsibly."

Chilli M now visits schools across the country educating the youth about alcohol and drug abuse.

The first seminar starts this Saturday at the taxi rank in Harding, KwaZulu-Natal, followed by another at Mount Nebo, also in Harding.

Chilli M, who started his radio career at the age of 18, has had a few run-ins with the law, including after beating up a girlfriend.

He was pulled off air in 2013 because he had a dispute with the management of Ukhozi FM.

He was also dropped from the line-up while working at YFM after a heated on-air argument with his producer. He said employers had written him off.

"I was considered an employment risk. I was unemployed for four years. Ukhozi took a risk and I am grateful for that," he said.

Chilli M has also worked at MetroFM and East Coast Radio.
