CD REVIEW: Pumeza's 'Voice of Hope'

PUMEZA Matshikiza is one of the few local female artists who have struck gold overseas.

Album: Voice of Hope

Artist: Pumeza

Reviewer: Lesley Mofokeng

PUMEZA Matshikiza is one of the few local female artists who have struck gold overseas. The Cape Town operatic soprano has graced all the major stages in the world.

Last month she was part of the star-studded Royal Variety Show performing for the UK's Prince William and his wife Catherine. She shared the stage with the likes of Dame Shirley Bassey and Bette Midler.

On this release she presents herself as the "Mama Africa" of opera with her interpretations of some of the hits originally sung by Miriam Makeba. From Pata Pata to The Click Song, she lifts them up to another level. The playful The Naughty Little Flea is a delight to hear.

She shows her prowess by tackling songs from Puccini's La Boheme and Turandot, backed by the Aurora Orchestra. She closes her offer with a touching Lakutshon'ilanga.

Verdict: Good
