Speedy has big plans for 2015

WITH his own record company and major hit collaborations with the likes of Uhuru and Professor, Speedy has taken a different route in his career since his days with Bongo Maffin.

Speedy, real name Harold Matlhaku, says he developed himself as a brand and has taken charge of his career. He insists he was never gone from the industry but rather was doing something different.

"For the past three years I have been doing collaborations and if you look at it globally that is where the industry is going. Features have worked for me and all these collaborations have been the biggest songs of my career," he says.

"Only recently have I decided to drop my solo singles and, regardless of that, I continue to collaborate with other artists because it works for me."

Speedy says he is also part of a movement called Africa Unite that encourages African artists to collaborate more.

"Myself and Donald have started the movement and it's to encourage other singers to collaborate. Rappers are collaborating but there aren't many vocalists collaborating. We are looking for vocalists to collaborate and I think it's a good thing."

He collaborated with Uhuru on their hit single Ungowami from their recent album called Our Father that went platinum.

Speedy says he is comfortable with his career and has big plans for 2015.

"I have dropped albums before and I thought of trying something different and it worked. I am in a good space now and working on my album and its being produced by Uhuru," he says.

His inspiration for his new album will be drawn from love but will remain dance music.

"My love life is not a success and I need to address that. I get cheated but I'm growing," he laughs.

The artist has widely been associated with controversial TV presenter Nonhle Thema but he rubbishes the claims that they are romantically involved.

"Nothing happened between me and Nonhle and nothing will ever happen. We have just been friends for a long time," he concludes.
