Cassper's 'rad, fun', awesome year

THIS has been Cassper Nyovest's year. The hip-hop star emerged from the shadows and put himself firmly out there as a force to be reckoned with.

His album sold gold and yielded several hits and he became a sought-after collaborator on international and local projects. He topped it off with a triple win at the Channel O Africa Music Awards last month.

Sowetan caught up with the rapper to take stock:

What has it been like getting so far in the industry?

I've been in the industry for the past 10 years, but 2014 has definitely been my biggest year to date. I'm still not used to all the fame. But it's been awesome, rad, fun, tiring but most of all a true blessing. I have the best fans.

Would you say this has been your year?

Yes, it has been great but I feel that we are just starting. We're only going to grow with time. My debut album Tsholofelo went gold in two months, and I've worked with amazing international artists. And I've finally managed to buy my mom a house.

Have you come to terms with you place in hip-hop?

Yes, I've come to realise the effect and influence. I don't take it for granted.

What did winning at the Channel O Africa awards mean?

It's a stepping stone for local hip-hop to take video of the year and best male across the African continent. We have to leverage on this and just keep building more.

What were some of the highlights of 2014?

Being nominated for five Channel O Awards and winning three. I became the first artist whose debut album went gold in just two months, my family coming to the awards and seeing what I do. I also got to work with Talib Kweli, Wizkid, Casey Veggies and DJ Drama.

What were some of your worst moments?

The beef in the industry.

What inspired you and kept you going?

My fans and family. I always want to give my fans something new, without them I wouldn't be where I am today. I also want to be really wealthy and change the lives of my family.

What are you grateful for?

My family and fans, my team and Jesus being present in my life.

What do you hope 2015 brings?

More blessings. I want to make sure 2015 is an even better year with more hits, more collaborations, more work and more awards.
