'I choose to sing lyrics that I have written': Aloe Blacc

In a world full of songs about money, fast cars and sex; Aloe Blacc is a refreshing reminder of what a true musician is.

Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III, better known as Aloe Blacc took some time out of his schedule to speak to journalists at a press conference held at the Universal Music offices in Rosebank on Monday morning.

The American singer, songwriter and rapper arrived in the country last week to headline the popular rock music festival Oppikoppi.

“The event is commonly known as a rock festival but when I got on stage it didn’t feel like one,” says Blacc.

‘Everyone was singing along and dancing which I like because music should not be a spectator sport.’

“I hope what I deliver to the world will inspire and motivate” says the singer who describes his lyrics as socially conscious.

Known mostly for his latest hits "I Need a Dollar" and "The Man”, Blacc is certainly living his dream after years in the music industry. This is evident in the kinds of songs he writes.

“Somewhere I heard that life is a test I’ve been though the worst but still I give my best. God made my mould different from the rest then he broke that mould so I know I'm blessed.

These are lyrics from ‘The man’.

It is through songs like these that one gets to understand the personal connection Blacc has to his songs.

“I choose to sing lyrics that I have written. The most important thing in music is creating a feeling; so as a singer you have to tell a story that matters to you”, says the 35-year-old singer/songwriter.

One of Blacc’s latest triumphs is the success of Avicii's "Wake Me Up," which he wrote and performed vocals for.

Music may be close to his heart but his first love still remains his family.

Aloe Blacc is married to Mexican rapper Maya Jupiter and they have a daughter named Mandela (after the late SA former president).

“My wife and I are philanthropists and humanitarians so we wanted our daughter to have a name that represents what is right about the world”.

In his brief stay in the country Blacc has been able to squeeze in visits to the Mandela centre of memory, Kliptown and the Thembalethu clinic.

He hopes to return to the country in the near future to perform for his fans.
