Over a cold one with Reason

The #ExtraColdMusic team went out to hang with the talented Reason at a studio in Bramely and shared his thoughts about SA’s music scene. Check out who he rates on the music scene and who he draws inspiration from.

Q: What would you say was your lucky break?

A: I think my lucky break was meeting ProVerb. My friend and I bunked school and went to my YFM, we wanted someone to hear our stuff and critises us. Luckily we went ProVerb and he did exactly that, 7 years later I’m here.

Q: What’s your favourite part of being a musician – Like performance, being in the recording studio or writing music?

A: My favourite part of being a musician is creating music, being in studio. Because that’s the part that makes or breaks you!

Q: What are the most played tracks on your iPod?

Q: Who in the music industry, local or international, alive or dead, would you mostly like to chat to over an Extra Cold One?

A: Hugh Masekela. He was the first to do it. 40 years later he is still on his A game

Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t in the music game?

A: I actually wanted to be an actor. I did drama and a little bit of theater in high-school

Q: What’s been the most extraordinary moment of your career so far?

A: I’m about to have an extra ordinary moment. It’s still coming.

Q: Who would you say is your inspiration when it comes to making music?

A: Hugh Masekela

Q: What are your favourite venues in SA to perform and party at?

A: Back To The City festival. I grew there and it reminds me where I started.

Q: Describe the SA music scene in one sentence.

A: It’s getting better for the artists.

Q: What words or advice would you give to aspiring South African artist?

A: I like talented people. So when I come across one I share all the experience I’ve gained over the years.

Q: Do you miss working in an ad agency?

A: Not really, because the line of work that I do (my own business) is art-direction. Now, I get to own my ideas and see them come to live.

Q: When you look at young upcoming emcees who do you think has the same passion for the game as Reason?
