A trip down memory lane with legends Hugh Masekela and Larry Willis

Jazz legends Bra Hugh Masekela and Larry Willis treated a number of handpicked guests to a nostalgic musical experience at Room Five in Rivonia, Johannesburg on Thursday night.

The musicians who had just flown in after finishing a US tour gave the fans a sterling performance of old classics from Jazz greats such as Billie Holiday, Miles Davies, Louis Armstrong and others while Bra Hugh told stories of the good ‘ol days and the love for music that combined most artists.

Speaking about his relationship with Willis which dates back to their College days in New York, Masekela said that it was their similar backgrounds and the passion for music that brought them together.

“Larry and I come from the worst ghettos, I come from Alexandra and he’s from Harlem so I think we were very glad to get out of there and that was our inspiration”

“We are actually bewitched with music, we are obsessed. So when you are obsessed with something you don’t need get a push, you just do it.”

The Glenlivet Legacy Live event was also attended by popular personalities such as Lucas Radebe, Mampho Brescia, Kgomotso Christopher as well as Zwai Bala and his wife Melanie.

“It’s an honour to be amongst legends, people who graced us with talent over the years and it is exciting” Isibaya actress, Mampho Brescia said.

Her sentiments were shared by Zwai Bala who added that Bra Hugh’s ‘young at heart’ attitude made him a great artist to watch.

Previous legacy live experiences previously featured Judith Sephuma and Selaelo Selota and according to Glenlivet’ Brand Manager Mandla Holomisa there’s more legendary artists to come.

“Our next instalment of The Glenlivet Legacy Live will be an unforgettable experience, with the perfect blend of whisky, music, inspiration and guests all in a private musical setting,” he said.
