KWAITO legend Mandla Mofokeng, better known to his fans as "Spikiri", donated about 30 school uniforms to disadvantaged Meadowlands High school pupils.

In an initiative of giving back to his community, Spikiri told Sowetan: "I know how hard it is to go to school without full uniform. My wish is to at least help those who are less fortunate."

Growing up poor in the same neighbourhood, Spikiri says he knows how hard it is for a child to go to school without uniform.

"I grew up poor and my family could not even afford school fees. I dropped out in Grade 10 to go and find other ways of surviving. This is when Chicco (Twala) invited me to work with him," he said.

Spikiri said this was not his first charity stint and probably not the last.

"The plan is to go around the country and help all those disadvantaged children. I would like to donate more like stationery and food," he said.

Spikiri is one of the country's finest music producers and is among the pioneer artists of kwaito.

For his 25-year contribution to the music industry he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the MetroFM Awards in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, two years ago.

Spikiri is also a founder and co-director of the influential record label Kalawa Jazzmee, which has released many well-known kwaito artists including Boom Shaka, Bongo Muffin, Alaska and B.O.P (Brothers of Peace).
