12 Years a Slave and American Hustle lead Critics' Choice Movie Awards

Steve McQueen's '12 Years a Slave' and David O. Russell's 'American Hustle' lead the Critics' Choice Movie Awards 2014 with 13 nominations each.

David O. Russell's 70s crime drama and Steve McQueen's historical slavery epic will fight it out in categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Acting Ensemble and Best Screenplay.

The two films' casts also picked up individual nominations, with Christian Bale up for Best Actor for his role in 'American Hustle', and Chiwetel Ejiofor for his leading turn in '12 Years a Slave'.

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper are nominated for Best Supporting Actor/Actress for their roles in the in the former and Michael Fassbender for Best Supporting Actor in the latter.

Competing with those two movies in the Best Picture category are 'Gravity' - the third most nominated film, with ten nods - 'Captain Phillips', 'Dallas Buyers Club', 'Her', 'Inside Llewyn Davis', 'Nebraska', 'Saving Mr. Banks' and 'The Wolf of Wall Street'.

The Critics Choice Awards - decided by the Broadcast Film Critics Association of North America, made up of around 300 reviewers from TV, radio and online outlets - are seen as a good early indicator of Oscars success.

The event will be broadcast live on Jan 16, 2014, from Santa Monica, California, hosted by Aisha Tyler.
