'Music can unite Africa'

"WE HAVE to end this xenophobia. We are all Africans and killing one another is an act of inhuman barbarity."

This was said by Ringo Madlingozi, one of the performers at the launch of the 9th Festival for Pan-African Music (Fespam), held at Soweto Theatre in Jabulani on Saturday.

Singer and activist Simphiwe Dana, who also showcased her talent, said she believed music brings people together and can unite Africa.

The biennial festival takes place in Brazzaville, Congo, from July 13-21. South Africa has been chosen as the country of honour following its efforts to stop unrest in Congo.

Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile said Fespam was an important step towards strengthening African solidarity
