Jazz fest gig a dream come true for Tiso

SINGER Putuma Tiso says she has worked very hard to get where she is today.

The Port Elizabeth-born performer says she is delighted to be part of the 14th Cape Town Jazz Festival, to be held in April.

"How many singers my age get an opportunity to have a 45 minutes set on such a big jazz stage? It has been 10 years of hard work and I'm glad I never gave up."

The 32-year-old singer says despite her self-titled debut album not selling that well, she is grateful for the support she received from her fans, media and fellow musicians.

"A debut album is always an artist's way of introducing themselves into the industry. Now that I am working on my second album, I have more creative freedom and I'm working with several producers to get a different sound from all the talent that South Africa has to offer."

Tiso reminds me that she was the opening act for Fourplay and Lalah Hathaway at the 2010 jazz festival.

"It's true that everything happens for a reason because when I came to Johannesburg 10 years ago, I came to study for a diploma in pharmacy.

"But securing session work as a musician I found my calling. I am proof that life does not always pan out as we envisioned, but we must embrace change to succeed," Tiso says.

She adds that her major focus this year is to further build her brand and secure more bookings.

Tiso boasts that working with legendary trumpeter and singer Hugh Masekela is one of her career highlights.

Tiso will perform on April 6 at the Cape Town Convention Centre.

Other artists in the line-up include Afrika Mkhize, Auriol Hays, Ben Sharpa, Pure Solid, Claire Phillips, Errol Dyers, Ibrahim Khalil Shihab, Jimmy Dludlu, Khuli Chana, AKA, Mafikizolo MiCasa, and Sonti.

US soul singer Jill Scott is expected to be the headline act.

The festival, a must for all jazz lovers, takes place from March 30 to April 6. - motaud@sowetan.co.za
