ACTRESS and singer Phinda Matlala, 35, is grateful to have cheated death and gotten another lease on life.

The singer, who is known for playing Rafiki in the stage musical The Lion King from 2000 to 2002, says she is grateful that the accident, which occurred in Cradock in Eastern Cape over a year ago, gave her a different perspective in life.

"I didn't come out and speak about the accident because my face had collapsed in the accident," she explains.

"It had to be reconstructed and I underwent two major operations to insert steel plates into my cheeks.

"I thought my face would never go back to its normal shape, but it has."

Matlala, who is still undergoing treatment, is grateful that her two young sons, aged 9 and 11, and their 8-year-old niece, who were in the car, didn't get hurt.

"It is through this incident that my latest album, Never Loved A Man, is dominated by love songs," the mother of five says.

"I thought I would never be able to sing again after the accident but God has favoured me again. I can still share my talent with my fans," she says.

The singer is grateful for the support of her husband Peter.
