Dumisani Mbebe joins heavyweight Inkaba cast

Popular actor Dumisani Mbebe, 35, who was recently fired from SA's most popular soapie Generations, has been given a lifeline.

He will resurface in Mzansi Magic’s first homegrown telenovela, Inkaba, playing one of the lead roles.

The series is due to launch March 19 and actual filming is beginning mid February.

Mbebe will star as the wealthy son of characters played by legendary John Kani and Nakedi Ribane.

Kani, who has always shied away from big television productions, has declined big international movies and stage productions to be part of Inkaba.

Inkaba is Kani’s brainchild and will act as the series' Executive Producer and will also breathe life into one of the main characters.

Mbebe has been cast in the part that would have been portrayed by the late Muzi “Clive” Ngwenya, who tragically died in his flat a couple of weeks ago.

“I am honoured to fill the shoes of this extraordinary man,” says Dumisani. “The industry has lost a great talent and I intend to play the character in a way that will do him proud.”

Mbebe is best known to South African audiences for his work on Generations. He has also played leading roles in local dramas such as Interrogation Room, Divers Down and Shooting Stars.

“Inkaba is a truly South African story that will captivate audiences from beginning to end. Our audiences are in for something very special.” Says Mbebe

“I am very excited to be playing such a character. I feel very honoured to be acting alongside such icons as John Kani, Nakedi Ribane and Ernest Ndlovu.”

Boasting a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Psychology, as well as a Masters in Drama and Acting, the charming actor was also seen across the globe in two episodes of ER.

Inkaba is set in the glamorous but fickle South African fashion industry and will depict South Africa’s rich social landscape that includes the very rich and powerful, the upwardly striving middle-class and the struggling poor.

“We are extremely proud of our ground-breaking proudly South African telenovela. It’s a story with depth, exploring our heritage, customs, vernacular and current life challenges in an unprecedented, highly entertaining way,” says Lebone Maema, Channel Head: Mzansi Magic

The series will play out over 208 episodes and unlike soaps, the long-running telenovela format has a clear beginning, middle and ending. The characters are multi-dimensional and the cast remains the same for the duration of the series.
