BORN in Cape Town and now making music on the world's best stages.

In the more than 30 years, he spent in music he has produced hits like 7th Avenue, Sarah, Lies and Please Stay, which made him the first black South African musician to successfully cross over to white audiences.

He moved to the United Kingdom, where he has spent more than 17 years. The 50-year-old singer and proud grandfather regularly visits Mzansi. He is back again in the country during Heritage Month for a few performances, including shows at the Teatro in Montecasino this weekend.

The born-again guitar maestro shares some of his best memories and things he loves in SA.

You've travelled worldwide with your performances, what is the one thing you always miss about South Africa?

I love the people. This is my home and it's always special when I come back. I would love to spend more time here and hope to be able to do that soon.

Through your travels do you have a special ornament that reminds you of home?

I received a carving from an old friend of mine last year, which was carved out of a tree that he and I used to climb when we were kids. It has a special place in my house in Encino, California.

You have spent many years abroad but still maintain a successful career in South Africa, how do you do it?

I come back every year and have always had a great relationship with SA. I think that music transcends all boundaries and cultures and my style is still African in many senses.

You performed in Moretele Park last weekend, how was the experience?

Wow, it was incredible to see 40 000 people all singing my songs with me. I was extremely overwhelmed and emotional.

Can we expect any collaborations with the local stars you met there?

I love so many local acts. I watched Lira perform at Jazz on the Lake last Sunday and she blew me away. I would love to work with her in future.

What are you up to during your stay and where can people look forward to see you perform?

I've been doing interviews most of the time but also have a few days to unwind. I look forward to visiting Soweto and having a braai sometime.

We're at Montecasino this weekend with two sold out shows on Friday and Saturday. The third show is on Sunday. Then I'm off to Cape Town.
