Beta blockers aid the heart

WHAT are beta blockers?

Beta blockers are a type of medication that are usually used to treat heart problems.

The name is short for beta-adrenergic blocking agents and they prevent epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) from binding to the beta cells on your nerves.

This results in a slowed transmission of nerve impulses to the heart.

When the nerve impulses are slowed, the heart needs less blood and less oxygen to function, which means that the heart rate slows down, preventing the constriction of blood vessels.

Usually, when the beta 1 cells are stimulated, the heart rate increases and blood vessels constrict (tighten) so more blood can flow to the skeletal muscles. This gets you ready to handle imminent danger - the fight-or-flight response.
