Art marvels on display

WHILE many young people can only read about art genius William Kentridge in books, budding visual artist Clement Mafora is already sharing gallery space with the icon.

Mafora and other artists, including Kentridge, are part of Artist Proof Studio's 21st Anniversary Celebration Exhibition which can be seen at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.

From Dobsonville in Soweto, the art student regards the opportunity as the biggest honour in his career that will launch his career "quickly".

The young recruit specialises in lithography, photolitho and dry point, which all fall under the art of print-making.

He is currently doing his third year at the Artist Proof Studio in Newtown.

He said: "I regard this as one of the greatest achievements in my life. It is my first time exhibiting and I get to be featured among the best artists. I looked up to people like Philimon Hlungwane and Kentridge. I still cannot believe that this is happening to me."

The 21-year-old artist profess that being part of the exhibition means that he is doing something right.

"I am excited. The exhibition was well attended, which means I got to be exposed to hundreds of art lovers. This will help me in building my profile."

At the exhibition, Mafora presented striking and very personal works. The young artist is inspired by simple things. Through his art he brings out an interesting life story of him and his mother.

"When I was young I used to watch my mother going to work carrying a bag. As soon as I began drawing, the first thing that I wanted to portray was my mother. I paint about our life history."

Mafora has always had passion for art. But when his family realised that he was dyslexic they sent him to Artist Proof Studio. Since he joined the institution, he has proved that art is his life.

Mafora is one of the Artist Proof Studio's top six students.
