Cinema strengthens cultural links

THE atmosphere is rather too foreign for an African movie junkie, perhaps more so because it's a Spanish movie screening in a French institute.

The movie house is a simple makeshift of the institute auditorium of the Alliance Francaise.

We are waiting to watch Cell 211, a thriller about a prisoner who wants to make a good impression at his new job.

Alliance Francaise cultural co-ordinator Damien Myrignac is the brain behind this cultural exchange programme between the French Embassy and South Africa, and the film screening forms part of the programme, but the screening fails to attract the intended audience.

The obvious factor is the location, which can hardly be accessed by a non-motorist and the time of the screening is another challenge for Myrignac.

The programme is targeting the youth . "We've already had young South African artists who are getting support from the programme, some are doing music and some are in film - which we hope will soon get the recognition they deserve", he adds.

He believes that the programme has the potential to achieve its objectives. "This is a good film. We are working on a new schedule to determine which townships to screen it in," he says.
