TOP rated stage and TV soapie actor Sello Maake Ka Ncube says fans have not gotten over his other role in Generations.

The actor is referring to the character of Archie Moroka, which he popularised more or less to the same extent as he has done with the role of Daniel Nyathi on e.tv's Scandal.

He played Archie before calling it quits twice - the last time in a dramatic fashion in 2004.

At the time he worked briefly at the Market Theatre as artistic director before leaving for London, where he landed the role of Mufasa in the Lion King.

"Till this day people stop me and ask me why I left Generations, and how, now that I am no longer there, they somehow find the soapie boring," he said.

Ka Ncube said at the time when he left Generations for the last time he was not happy with the way the soapie's directors somehow disregarded African culture.

"But I have learnt something in life - to separate work from my own principles," he said.

When Ka Ncube left Generations he went to London, landing a role in the Lion King, after which he acted in some of the leading theatre productions on the West End. But in between acting he went back to school to study, earning himself a master's degree in screen-writing.

Since his return he has written one production, Tap Roots, a musical in the same mould as other successful South African musicals such as Umoja and African Footprint.

Ka Ncube explained that it was inevitable for people in his position to do more than just acting since they are forced to become cultural activists in between acting a result of the way things are in the cultural industry.

He revealed that his plans to start a performance arts academy are at an advanced stage with a media launch planned for the end of next month. The academy will be situated in Soweto.

For his role as Mandela in director Aubrey Sekhabi's production of Rivonia Trial, Ka Ncube has been nominated in the Naledi Awards.

This was for his portrayal of former president Nelson Mandela during his years as a firebrand leading to the Rivonia Trial.

"I have acted in many productions, including leading roles, but this one is the highlight of my acting career," he said.

Ka Ncube has in the last two years suffered setbacks, including the loss of his son in a car accident. He was also linked to a woman who claimed they were lovers and their relationship soured, ending in an ugly public spat involving the police.

"What was reported in the media was not the truth. I do not want to dignify the whole thing by commenting other than saying that the woman wanted to destroy my public image," he said.

"And for that I hope she has succeeded. But if she hasn't, I am available to help her to achieve that," he added sarcastically. He denied that they were ever romantically involved as their relationship was only confined to business.
