GOSPEL singer Jay-Jay Mnisi says in his latest album, Holokile/Kulungile, he is taking his fans on a personal journey.

Mnisi, a former teacher, returns to the industry after a two-year break with a spiritual reviving offering. The incredible singer and songwriter is definitely making headway with his new project.

"What makes this album different is that it is very personal to me. It also showcased my spiritual growth as a gospel singer. In my previous albums I was struggling to get that close relationship with God."

Mnisi says he wanted to do things differently in his fifth CD. Unlike his previous albums, which were recorded in Johannesburg, this one was recorded in studios in Durban.

"I recorded the album in Durban because I wanted a different kind of inspiration. Sometimes the overcrowding in Johannesburg affects the creativity of musicians," the Mpumalanga-born artist says.

The title track has scriptural lyrics and impeccable harmonies.

He says the lyrics are about situations that people face daily.

"Some songs were inspired by my personal experiences. When I faced certain challenges I realise that friends and even certain family members are not always there for you when you need them. When you are really in trouble you find out who is genuine. I have added one of my classical songs, Sehlabelo Saka, that is very close to my heart."

This is Mnisi's first album to be released under his new recording label, AmJay Records, based in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.

Mnisi started his career in 2002 with Sehlabelo Saka, which was followed two years later by Uyisimanga. In 2006 he releasedNgizobambelela and in 2008 he released Izulu.
