Stages in the life of a butterfly

I HAD a question about butterflies.

Butterflies go through four stages during their lives, during which they undergo metamorphosis. The stages are egg, larva, pupa and adult.

It starts life as a very small egg. If you look closely , you can see the tiny caterpillar growing inside of it. Some eggs are round, others oval and some ribbed. The shape depends on the type of butterfly that laid the egg. When the egg hatches, the larva, or caterpillar, pops out. During this stage all they do is eat.

Once the caterpillar is finished growing, it makes itself into a pupa, or chrysalis. From the outside, it looks like the caterpillar is resting, but it is actually changing.

Finally, when the caterpillar has completed its transformation, the adult butterfly emerges. When it first comes out of the cocoon, both its wings are soft and folded against its body. After a rest, the butterfly pumps blood into its wings to get them flapping, and then it begins to fly.
