All time 'diva of flies' named after Beyonce

Pop diva and new mother Beyonce, has had many accolades in the past, but we're wondering if this latest one would bug her in the least...

Australian scientists have named a rare horse fly from far northern Queensland in her honour because of its impressive golden lower abdomen.

"It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly's abdomen that led me to name this fly in honour of the performer Beyonce as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy -- the naming of species," he said.

The Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae species was collected in 1981 in Queensland state, the same year the former Destiny's Child singer was born, but had never been named.

Although often considered a pest, many species of horse fly are important pollinators of plants, said Lessard.

Beyonce has recently given birth to baby girl Blue Ivy on the 7 January 2012 and is married to rapper, record producer, entrepreneur Jay-Z 'Shawn Carter'.

The naming of animal species is required to comply with guidelines established by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN).[7] The ICZN's guidelines allow for species to receive names that honour people, including celebrities.[8] Other species named after famous people include Hyla stingi, a frog named after the singer Sting; Pachygnatha zappa, a spider named after singer-songwriter Frank Zappa; and three beetle species from the Agathidium genus (A. bushi, A. cheneyi and A. rumsfeli) named after American politicians George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld respectively.
