Gloria steals show

THE audience was small, perhaps too small for an artist of her calibre, but jazz vocalist Gloria Bosman performed with the same energy and determination she usually displays in front of capacity crowds.

She sang her heart out at the Old Mutual Jazz at the Theatre series at Mandela Square in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Sometimes serious and at other times sexy by simulating pole dancing, Bosman was fantastic on Sunday. Thank goodness, though, there were no children at the concert.

Sampling from her rich repertoire of music from several of her albums over the years, Bosman mesmerised the crowd. Her performance was reminiscent of the time when Johannesburg used to host intimate concerts.

And when the opera-trained jazz vocalist announced her last song it became obvious that the show had wrapped up the long-running jazz series in style.

The event also saw emerging artist Brenda Mtambo, as yet to be recorded, walk away with R10000 from Old Mutual. She was the most impressive of all the emerging artists featured alongside the main act at the jazz series.

The vocally-gifted Mtambo was overwhelmed and could not hide her excitement when she was presented with her prize money. She will use the money to release her first album in the new year.

Mtambo, whose thick, baritone voice was first noticed earlier this year at the launch of Judith Sephuma's album at Emperors Palace in Boksburg, is clearly headed for the stars if the reception she received on Sunday is anything to go by.

She is definitely an artist with talent to look forward to in the new year, particularly in Afro-jazz-soul music circles.
