CULTURAL big guns came out in support of Ukhozi FM DJ Ngizwe Mchunu in his case against King Shaka International Airport in Durban for threatening to destroy his traditional shield.

Praise singer Zolani Mkiva and African queen of Ndebele music, Nothembi Mkhwebane, showed up at the Equality Court in Durban to support Mchunu in his R10-million discrimination and defamation lawsuit.

Mkiva said that his presence was to defend "tradition" and give his "unequivocal support" to Mchunu so that his case would set a precedent.

"I have experienced the humiliation Mchunu suffered as a similar incident happened to me in 2005 when my knobkerrie was mishandled in the old Durban International Airport," he said.

Mchunu brought the lawsuit against King Shaka International Airport, agriculture department official Thalamothalo Phaka and the SA Revenue Service's customs and excise after Phaka allegedly threatened to destroy his traditional shield (ihawu) at the airport as it contained "foot-and-mouth disease".

Mchunu was returning from representing South Africa at a cultural event in Dubai when the incident happened.
