Good vibes at Joy of Jazz gig

WYNTON Marsallis took the Standard Bank International Joy of Jazz to another level when he invited diva Sibongile Khumalo on stage for an unrehearsed, impromptu performance of Lakutshon' ilanga.

After a false start the two gave a marvellous rendition, inspired and with a fresh tinge to it.

What can we say about the two. These are extraordinarily talented and seasoned individuals who gave a Grammy-winning performance that earned them a standing ovation.

On the same stage I had the opportunity to watch Tutu Puoane, who was accompanied by the Brussels Orchestra band. What impressed me about her was her love for Miriam Makeba. Her set was 95percent made up of music by the legendary Mama Africa.

Just listening toWhen I have Passed On from her rare collection of The magic Of Makeba, I got goose-bumps.

I never thought I would be bowled over by Frank McComb, whom I unfortunately missed an interview with, thanks to some bureaucratic bungling.

He was hotter than hot. The man puts his heart and soul into his music. I loved his performance and declare myself a fan for life.

Alexander O' Neal is adventurous soul who floated to the stage on Friday, leaving people concerned about his ability to perform. He managed.

On Friday he was on fire, taking his audience on a nostalgic trip of romantic, soulful and dance songs that had everybody bopping to the beat.

I am happy that he either limited or did not enjoy the waters of immortality. His show was the most danced to and induced the greatest sing-along.

All in all, it was an improved Standard Bank International Joy of Jazz. Notably the seven stages, and easy access. The only thing I was not impressed with was why we were not checked for any contraband as we entered the stage village. We were inconvenienced inside. The media had to queue with everyone, wasting precious time moving from one venue to another.

Surely the organisers could improve on that. It should also be clear when the food courts close because we cannot sit there and miss out on the action while we stuff ourselves blue. We can only eat after work.

The vibe was amazing and I really enjoyed the avalanche of music. I can't wait for next year's festival for more surprises to elevate my knowledge and experience of music,or kanjani...
