Dancing in the US and Canada

CELEBRATED choreographer Gregory Maqoma is currently touring Canada and the US with his programme of duets called Southern Bound Comfort.

Performed with longtime creative partner and award-winning dancer Shanell Winlock, Maqoma's Southern Comfort looks at how perceived ideas shape the human experience.

Examining behaviour, attitudes and reactions, this humorous and passionate piece features highly charged partnering with whiplash turns.

The second duet, Bound, is conceptually collaborated with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and it unites the three artists in contemporary dance as a space in which traditions fuse. Bound is performed by Maqoma and Shanell Winlock.

Drawing on the three collaborators' cultural backgrounds, it explores the ways in which we relate to each other, our heritage and our desires.

Maqoma started his dance training in 1990 with the Moving into Dance Compony. While with the compony, he established himself as an internationally renowned dancer, choreographer, director and scriptwriter for his works.

In 1999 he founded the Vuyani Dance Theatre (VDT) with the aim of transferring skills and giving back to the community through the outreach programme.

Maqoma won the FNB Vita Choreographer of the Year Award, Daimler Chrysler Choreography Award and Rolex Mentorship Programme.

In 2006, he won the Gauteng MEC statuette for his work Beautiful US and Beautiful Me respectively.

Maqoma's work has been seen in Africa, Europe, the US and South America. He was associate artistic director of the FNB Dance Umbrella festival 2010 and artistic director of the Afro-Vibes Festival in the Netherlands and the UK.

He was also head choreographer for the World Summit of Arts and Culture in Johannesburg, where he presented a dance piece called 3 Colours with Brett Bailey.
