Life on the street is tough

MORE women are making their mark in mainstream theatre

Ntshieng Mogoro and Nakedi Ribane have made quite a name for themselves in this once male-dominated industry.

Now, another talented individual, Keamogetswe Moeketsane, has joined the pack.

Moeketsane is director of the play Zollie that opens at the SouthAfrican State Theatre in Pretoria tomorrow.

The play is set in the dark corners and streets of the Pretoria CBD. It tells about the daily life of a street kid called Zollie, who decides to change his life.

The boy recruits a young girl called Snoopy and a druggie called Fudge and together they try to live a changed life at the back of a restaurant owned by Maria and George Georgio.

Maria gives them small chores to do in exchange for scraps from the restaurant.

The conflict starts when Fudge is lured back into his old life by Knife, the leader of his old gang.

A seemingly mundane life on the street takes a dark and twisted turn - making the play an exciting experience for the audience.

Moeketsane, who holds a national diploma in drama from Tshwane University of Technology, has proved that she is among the top women in this industry.

She also works at the State Theatre, teaching drama, improvisational techniques and movement.

She has also directed Police Files with Vezaokuhle Art Productions for the Mzansi Fela Festival.

Zollie's cast includes Katlego Maphoto, Thulani Tshoga, Nozipho Themba, Nebo Mafabatho, Dorah Manamela, Joseph Komani and Sherldon Marema.

It will run until 3 April.
