Annual film festival has lots in store

THE Eastern Cape is positioning itself as the hub for the local film industry.

The province is at present hosting the South African Youth International Film Festival at Nelson Mandela Bay, Port Elizabeth, until December 12.

The annual festival, which started yesterday, targets developing filmmakers . Positioned alongside the Nab'Ubomi Inter-School Short Film Competition it offers major role players of the film and television industry an opportunity to network with and to discover talent.

The event began yesterday with pre-festival screenings for school groups and communities. These will run until December 10 at various venues in Port Elizabeth.

Venues such as the Babs Madlikane Hall, Gelvandale Library, Zwide Library, Newton Park Library Auditorium and Motherwell Library will screen various films.

The festival runs from December 9 to 12. There will be workshops, discussions and an award ceremony.

Festival coordinator Zomzi Ntshona says: "This annual festival is an opportunity for Nelson Mandela Bay to become the watering hole for young, creative talent."

Funded by the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, issues such as the art of pitching, concept and stories for documentaries, editing for beginners and sports videos will be covered.

Ntshona says in the long run the festival is aimed at being a creative event that will stand shoulder to shoulder with other movie festivals in the country.

She says it will showcase professionally produced feature films, with directors, producers, cast or crew present to interact with and impart knowledge to delegates.

"We want to allow guests to discover new areas of interest and to develop basic skills through presentations and workshops. We aspire to communicate a realistic understanding of the nature and state of the film and television industry, giving direction to young people starting a career in this industry," Ntshona says.

She says this will be a great opportunity for the industry to invest time and expertise in the youth.
