Dana delivers electrifying performance

Her performance with a 22-piece band, including an orchestra, confirmed Simphiwe Dana as a musical genius

NO. It was not an ordinary Evening with Simphiwe Dana at the Lyric Theatre on Wednesday night, as the once-off concert promoter has marketed it. It was a musical odyssey.

And what an emotional journey it was. From the moment she grabbed the mic and dished out the classic Lakutshona iLanga, it was clear those present were in for a roller coaster ride.

It's the grace and humbleness with which she performs that I think has won the hearts of many.

Dressed in a long black dress and high heels, she impressed with each song she belted out. Even more impressive was when she invited a woman she introduced as her aunt on stage to perform a traditional Xhosa song with traditional instruments.

Most will agree that not many musicians of her generation can perform with an orchestra. But this songstress did it in grand fashion.

She is in a league of her own. Her performance with a 22-piece band, including an orchestra, confirmed Dana as a musical genius. The audience was blown away by this smooth-voiced musician.

I had not listened to her new album Kulture Noir and was moved to tears when she sang the tracks in grand style.

The album has reached No3 on Europe's World Music charts and No1 in Germany. In SA it bagged Best Female Artist and Best Contemporary Jazz Album at the Metro FM Awards at the weekend.
