Delightful flavours to suit everyone

PHINDA Mtya Matlala's conversation crackles with the potent blend of exuberance of an experienced and witty woman who is spontaneous whether discussing women's issues or music matters.

I discover this as we chat about her latest offering, Heaven Can Wait. The album is an eclectic blend of her many musical influences, depth and cultural consciousness.

Following her previous albums, the new project continues to showcase her incredible vocal range. Whether it's contemporary jazz or deep into folk music, she delights listeners with her sweet and mellow voice.

The songstress does more than just sing, she tells stories in song.

Matlala's previous projects, Mbheka Ngaphesheya and Yithi Paha, were dominated by contemporary jazz sound blended with folk. Her latest offering is diluted with an Afro-pop sound.

"I am not moving away from my original sound. But again I am not good at keeping formats. I will agree that there is a small element of Afro-pop in my music. It is not added for a certain purpose."

Heaven Can Wait is delightful to listen to, masterfully crafted by producer Steve Dyer. From the upbeat to the sonorous and mellow there is a flavour for absolutely everyone to savour here. She also features talented singer Slique Angel in songs like Umalume and Bunzima Ubomi.

"I have retained my old team," she says. "I have also worked with Slique on two songs. My husband (Morgan) and I are executive producers this time around."

Matlala's music is not the kind you listen to and fall in love with right away.

The more you listen to it the more it grows on you.

Since her debut she has been applauded as one of the best composers. Her lyrics are dished out in profound isiXhosa and spiced up with metaphors and idioms.

Her music is also loaded with constructive advice aimed at repairing marriages.

Those who understand her sound will agree that her music is delivered in a humorous way that makes you laugh and think

"If you listen carefully to my music there is a story behind the story," she explains.

"So I am chuffed whenever someone understands what I am trying to say,-

"For me anything can be a song. I listen to you and try to imagine how I would react if I were in your shoes."
