Tyelele just loves her new role

MOTSHABI Tyelele, who will put her acting skills to the test once again in Nothing but the Truth, which opens tomorrow at the Market Theatre, says she saw the role coming.

Tyelele told Sowetan this week: "I can never underestimate any role in theatre that I get. I have to ask hard questions and try to close all the loopholes that may stand in the way of the audience's understanding of my character.

"I can never stress enough the importance of education. My work as a performer is to make sure my interpretation is good. I have to cover all angles.

"Sometimes during the rehearsals I fear even to eat, wanting to remain focused because of the sacredness of this piece. I can never boast about now having arrived. I hope and pray that my role helps students to have more clarity of text and history. I love this piece with all my heart."

Landing this starring role in the multi-award- winning stage production last year around November was exciting news to her, she says. But she saw it coming the first time she saw the piece in 2002 - when it was first put on the stages of the Market Theatre.

"When I first saw the stage production, I knew that one day I was going to get involved in it. And when the producers approached me eventually, for me it was a question of confirming what they often say - that the things you wish for often come true in life.

"First, it was the movie, which was shot in Durban in a very short space of time. In fact, I had a week to rehearse for the role. It was exciting but challenging at the same time.

"The shooting schedule was tight. I feel privileged though that I got involved in the movie and did this story.

"I just wish we could redo the movie, or other people would redo it and interpret the story in their own ways, because this is an important story to be told. It is such a wonderful piece of history," she said.

Tyelele plays the role of Thando Makhaya, while John Kani (writer and director) and Welile Tembe star as Sipho Makhaya and Mandisa Makhaya respectively.
