His world is a stage

STAGE director and television actor Bongani Madondo is fast becoming a household name.

Born in Orlando West, Soweto, in 1979, Madondo made a name for himself in the Absa Bafana advert. Since then, he has appeared in a number of TV dramas.

His latest show, Neighbours, will be flighted by e.tv as part of Ekasi: Our Stories.

The series comprises eight dramas about life in the townships.

Neighbours will kick off the series on the free channel on August 9 at 9pm.

Produced by Sobabili Production, Neighbours is about a struggling actress and single mother, who can no longer afford her lavish lifestyle because she is fired from a soapie.

"She is forced to move from her upmarket suburban home to the township, where she is in constant conflict with her neighbour, who runs a makeshift 24-hour car wash," Madondo said.

"I play the role of an agent who tries to revive her career," he said.

Madondo, who is also a writer and director, played Detective Ndovela in the second and third season of SABC1's Mtunzini.com.

He also acted in the SABC1 sitcom Moferefere Lenyalong in 2008.

He obtained a diploma from the Soyikwa Institute of African Theatre based in Diepkloof, Soweto, where he specialised in acting, writing, directing, voice training and voice analysis.

He has also acted in and has directed plays such as Julius Caesar, Ubonanakele, Not Guilty, Shona Ma-Million, It Ain Over, Oboneng, Souls of no Success, Thicker than Water and Lenyalo.
