Calm restored in Freedom Park after IEC tents torched

Two Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) tents were burnt down in Freedom Park on Monday‚ as residents took to the streets to protest power failures in the area.

That’s according to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza‚ who said that the incident took place after 8pm on Monday night.

“The tents were burnt and we are investigating. No arrests [have been made]‚” she said.

Kweza said that police did not yet have any further details on the incident‚ but that calm had been restored in the suburb‚ near Eldorado Park‚ southwest of Johannesburg‚ following the demonstrations.

“At this moment it’s quiet and we are monitoring the situation‚” she said.

The IEC said on Tuesday that the incident was “unfortunate”‚ but added that both tents had been replaced so that voting could continue.

Protests erupted in Freedom Park earlier this year following the murder of African National Congress Freedom Park ward councillor Mbuyiselo Dokolwane in February. – TMG Digital
