Huge haul of fake takkies uncovered at border

More than R23-million worth of suspected counterfeit shoes was confiscated by customs when a truck carrying them was stopped at the Lebombo border post in Mpumalanga last week.

South African Revenue Services (Sars) spokesperson Sandile Memela said that the truck was travelling from Mozambique into South Africa.

The routine check uncovered a large quantity of white plastic bags which contained 29304 pairs of counterfeit shoes worth about R23.4-million.

The recovered footwear included 20164 pairs of counterfeit Adidas‚ 3627 pairs of Nike and 5077 pairs of All Star takkies‚ among others.

“Sars customs detained the truck and goods for an authentication process through relevant brand holders‚” he said.

The investigation has been handed over to the South African Police Service.
