Sony to slash 1 000 jobs: Report

Sony Corp plans to eliminate another 1,000 workers in its smartphone business, mainly in Europe and China, a report said Wednesday.

The cuts are in addition to the 1,000 employees that the struggling Japanese electronics giant announced it would cut in October in the sector, the Nikkei business daily reported without citing any sources.

In all, Sony's smartphone business workforce will shrink by about 30 per cent to 5,000 by March 2016, the paper said.

Sony, which has been left far behind such rivals as Apple and Samsung Electronics, is expected to announce the new restructuring plan when releasing its earnings on February 4, the report said.
