SA up for international award

South Africa's business process outsourcing industry has been nominated for the European Outsourcing Association's offshore destination of the year award.

"This sector is delivering a massive boost to growth and jobs, especially for our youth," Western Cape economic opportunities MEC Alan Winde said on Wednesday.

"Currently there are just over 40,000 people employed in the industry. By next year the job numbers are expected to grow to 52,245," he said. The sector was expected to employ 65,303 people by 2016.

Winde said business process outsourcing was one of the Western Cape's growth sectors and was worth an estimated R8 billion.

He said the province had the critical factors in place to become a leading call-centre hub, in that it offered exceptional services to clients at a competitive price.

South Africa won the award last year.
