Eskom defends high salaries

ESKOM chief executive officer Brian Dames revealed during this week's presentation of the annual results for the year ended March 31 that the parastatal's employees on average each earned just above half a million rand.

The heavy hitters, however, were company directors and executive managers, who shared R57-million in total compared to last year's R54-million.

Dames pocketed R8.5-million while outgoing chief financial officer Paul O'Flaherty took home R6-million.

Eskom chairman Zola Tsotsi defended the salaries of his executives, saying they were high because Eskom had to compete with private companies for highly skilled personnel.

Labour analyst Loane Sharp described the salaries as "highly extravagant".

"Eskom's failures have been catastrophic for the country, and yet the executives earn unacceptably high wages ..."

In the past financial year Eskom borrowed R202-billion, and will need an additional R450-billion in the current financial year.
