SAA reconsiders accepting new union

THE newly formed National Transport Movement is waiting for the outcome of a South African Airways management meeting before deciding whether its members at the national carrier will strike.

The union has waged a battle with SAA management to be granted recognition, which would give them the right to bargain.

But SAA has maintained that the union does not have enough numbers to justify its existence and recognition.

The national airline refused to acknowledge the existence of NTM on the basis that some of its members were contract workers and managers at SAA.

But after relentless pressure from the union and the threat of a strike last Friday, management requested that it be given a chance to hold a meeting to review the matter.

SAA spokesman Tlali Tlali yesterday said the meeting would take place "in the next few days".

"A dispute between SAA and NTM is centred on a claim made by NTM that they have the requisite number of members in order to obtain recognition.

"The two parties subjected themselves to a verification process led by the CCMA," Tlali said.

"[It] revealed that NTM had 1111 members and not 1200 as required. NTM's argument is anchored in a claim that their membership stands at 1317. Their figure includes employees who fall outside the bargaining unit," he said.

NTM general secretary Craig Nte yesterday said they would go on strike should SAA not recognise the union.

He said the argument that some of the union members were contract workers and managers was invalid.
