AngloGold Ashanti warns strikers

AngloGold Ashanti, the world’s third largest gold producer, on Monday became the latest mining firm to issue an ultimatum to striking workers that they must return to the mines or be dismissed.

The firm gave workers until midday on Wednesday to return to work.

Some 24,000 miners had been on strike at the company’s facilities across South Africa, although some workers at the Kopanang and Great Noligwa operations have already began to return to work.

The company said it needed to take a full tally of returning workers before saying how many more face the sack.

The firm said it was losing around 32,000 ounces of production a week because of the work stoppage.

“Those who return to work by this time will receive the improved wage offer,” he said. “Those who do not present themselves for work by 12h00 on Wednesday 24 October will be dismissed.”

After months of industrial unrest South African mine operators have ratcheted up the pressure on strikers in recent days, with Anglo American and Gold Fields threatening more sackings if strikes do not end.
