The University of Zululand will receive R64 million for a programme aimed at ensuring it receives accreditation from the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica), the accountancy body says
“Through this project, 400 learners will gain access to a high-quality undergraduate degree programme with international recognition,” Saica senior executive Chantyl Mulder said in a statement.
“We are hoping to produce a new breed of chartered accountants who are willing to plough back into their communities to make a difference.”
The programme aimed to enable the university to offer a BCom degree in accounting with teaching standards that were consistent with the chartered accountancy profession.
Saica, the Banking Sector Education and Training Authority, and the University of Cape Town would be part of the project.
The university’s vice-chancellor, Prof Fikile Mazibuko, said it was proud to be part of an initiative which would add value to the quality of an accounting qualification.
“We are doing this not only for [the University of Zululand], but for the greater need of the continent. We want to see a programme that will produce ethically strong accountants, as this is the calibre of professionals the world needs.”
