Bokoni mine also sacks strikers

More than 2,000 workers at the Bokoni Platinum mine were fired for taking part in an illegal strike that began last week.

“The official figure is 2,161 workers...” Bokoni Platinum executive Joel Kesler said on Tuesday.

A large part of the Limpopo-based company’s 3,500 permanent staff and 900 contractors embarked on an illegal strike on Monday.

Formal dismissal notices were issued after disciplinary hearings on Friday.

He said mining management had received reports of threats of intimidation, but no acts of violence or damage to property had occurred.

No formal demands were received from the strikers, and union leadership had “distanced” itself from the protest.
