Eastern Cape school top in money contest

The Eastern Cape held its own in the 2012 JSE Liberty Investment Challenge, with Ntabenkonyana High School at Middledrift taking a second consecutive win in the Income Portfolio category again this year.

The challenge is the largest financial literacy initiative in the country and seeks to educate high school pupils as well as university students on the intricacies of trading on the stock market.

The all-boys Ntabenkonyana High School team - called the NHS1 -comprising Grade 10 pupils earned a total prize money of R28944.45.

The boys were up against teams from North West and Free State, who won in the Equity Portfolio category and the Investment Challenge category respectively.

Ntabenkonyana High School teacher Khanyiswa Peteni said she had for the past six years been trying to involve her pupils in the competition and was proud of both their performance and their achievement this year.

"I'm so proud of the team's performance this year. The learners are showing great interest and are learning a lot from the Investment Challenge. They have vowed to take this further and are going to pass on the knowledge they have gained to friends and family," said Peteni.

She added that the challenge was a great tool which would go a long way in preparing the pupils to be financially responsible adults.

Overall category winners are due to be announced on October 31.

An all-expenses paid trip to the awards ceremony to be held at the JSE in Johannesburg will also be on offer.

"The JSE education department is proud of the performance by Eastern Cape," senior Investment Challenge coordinator Idris Seedat said yesterday.
