THE SABC's Chief Financial Officer, Gugu Duda, has been suspended in connection with allegations of irregularity related to procurement.
SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago confirmed last night that Duda was suspended by the public broadcaster's board.
Kganyago said the decision to suspend Duda was based on the information the board received from an investigation conducted by external forensic lawyers into procurement.
"That investigation has already resulted in the suspension of the acting head of procurement (Nompilo Dlamini).
"Because procurement falls under the CFO, and because the investigation implicates the CFO, the board suspended her," said Kganyago.
He added that further information from an internal investigation led the board to believe that it has sufficient information to suspend her.
Duda refused to sign a letter informing her of the suspension, Kganyago said, but presented the board with a letter from her lawyer in response.
Earlier this week, board chairperson Ben Ngubane tabled a motion of no confidence against board member Cawekazi Mahlati in parliament.
Ngubane told members of parliament that Mahlati was behind a campaign to remove the acting chief operating officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, because he was blocking a tendering process she appeared to have an interest in.
The tender is believed to be worth R500-million.
Kganyago said the board is profoundly disappointed at these alleged irregularities which have the potential to severely undermine good governance and financial stability.
"We are determined to act against them in a robust manner and ensure that the SABC strictly adheres to good corporate governance," he said.
Communications Minister Dina Pule appointed Duda in February this year, and she was hailed as an ideal candidate given her impressive qualifications and experience.
She is a chartered accountant who has served as an investment manager at an investment company and chief financial officer of First National Bank.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said it supported the board's recommendation that Mahlati should be removed and the suspension of Duda.
CWU spokesman Mantakana Mothapo accused Mahlati of being disruptive and causing instability.
