South Africans undertake most trips in December

A SURVEY undertaken by Statistics SA (Stats SA) showed that about 7,6million domestic day trips and 12,4million domestic overnight trips were undertaken by South African residents between January and December 2010.

The survey estimated that most day and overnight trips were taken in December 2010, which was when most of SA closed down for the Christmas holidays. About four million day trips were taken in December 2010 as well as almost 4,7million overnight trips.

Other months which coincide with school holidays also show a relatively high frequency of trips taken with three million day trips and 3,2million overnight trips in April; September (3,2million and 2,8million) and June (three million and 3,2million) for day and overnight trips respectively.

The survey collected information from households on the kind of trips they took during the 12-month period. These trips were categorised as a day trip inside SA, and overnight trip inside SA.

Further details pertaining to these were obtained from respondents, namely the most recent trip/s they took, for example the main destination, the purpose of the trip, and main mode of transport used to reach the main destination. A domestic trip is defined as a trip within the boundaries of SA, but outside the respondent's usual environment, that is, 40km radius or more.

Funerals accounted for 6,3% of day trips and a large 11,7% of overnight trips.
