SABS standard to ensure new clothes fit you

THE South African Bureau of Standards has introduced standards of ensuring the correct sizing and measurements of clothing items available to the public.

The SABS's move will be welcomed by consumers who experience the disappointment of purchasing a new garment in their usual size, only to try it on and discover it's too small or tight. The standard ensures that the guidelines contain garment construction specifications that cover the process of standardising measurement prior to the preparation of clothing patterns.

"Of huge benefit to SMMEs at large, the standard is simple and provides an excellent guideline to manufacturers in the industry. It also compliments a similar method of clothing measurement, which gives accurate and appropriate guideline sizes of a body type and size, ensuring the acceptable drafting of patterns and the resulting fit," the SABS said in a statement yesterday.

The standard, called SANS 8559, specifies a very simple method of measuring body dimensions or sizes with a tape and a measuring stand, or a graduated ruler.
