BUDDING chefs Aart Verrips and Gerdi Scholtz, winners of LG Electronics' third national LG Life Tastes Good Championship, will represent South Africa at the competition's Africa and Middle-East finals in Turkey.

Verrips is enrolled at a cookery school and is an apprentice at the Savoy Cabbage Restaurant and Champagne Bar in Cape Town. Scholtz is also about to complete her studies and is doing her practical training at Majeka House in Stellenbosch.

Verrips and Scholtz pipped Mona Diack and Valerie Burns in an exciting South African final with a sumptuous chicken ballantine with roasted vegetables and béarnaise sauce.

Diack and Burns cooked deboned pork loin with blue cheese and green fig preserve but the judges settled for Verrips and Scholtz's dish.

Prizes for this year's winners include an LG SolarDOM oven each, R30000 in cash and a chance to represent South Africa in Turkey.

"We are delighted. Quality cooking is a tough game and the standards were very high. As passionate food lovers and chefs-in-the-making we are extremely proud to have won," Scholtz said.

The LG Life Tastes Good Championship is South Africa's first locally produced reality "cook-off' show.

Held over 13 episodes, the show encourages non-professional food wizards to enter their best recipes and, together with a friend, prepare their dishes for the judges to select a winning team in each show. There were 16 teams in this year's competition.

The competition was judged by well-known SA food personality Jenny Morris, who is also known as 'The Giggling Gourmet'.

The show was hosted by 702 radio personality Kieno Kammies.

"With the LG Life Tastes Good Championship 2011 open to all food lovers, we saw an assortment of culinary creations and recipes," said Bronwyn Hume, senior manager corporate marketing for LG South Africa.
