UNIVERSITY students Boitshoko Mokgautsi and Alex Lenferna will represent South Africa at the 2011 Bayer Young Environmental Envoys' field project inGermany in October.

Mokgautsi, 21, who is studying at the University of Johannesburg, and Lenferna, 24, who is studying at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, were selected at an intense adjudication session held at Bayer South Africa's head office in Isando at the weekend.

Lenferna, 24, is a member of the South East African Climate Consortium Students Forum at Rhodes University.

The forum is a students' crusade to tackle sustainable development and climate change issues.

Mogautsi, 21, is with Johannesburg-based Centigrade, a network of primary school pupils who are "socially responsible and consciously accountable and active in alleviating climate change".

Other candidates in the running are Sthembiso Makelefane and Nthabiseng Letseng. Run in partnership with the UN Environment Programme, the Bayer Young Environmental Envoys project nurtures future nature conservationists, conscientious environmental awareness and education practitioners and activists. Sowetan is a media, publicity and nation-building partner.

The knowledge gained from these tours has spurred the youth towards increasing their participation in meaningful and effective environmental protection activities.

Qualifying candidates will go on a field trip to Germany, which boasts all the latest concepts on sustainable development, philosophies and practices.

Inaugurated in Thailand in 1998, the Bayer Young Environmental Programme includes Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Venezuela and Vietnam.

South Africa's representatives in 2008 were Simon Mayson and Refilwe Mokobodi, while Tribute Mboweni and Ntendeni Luvhengo went to Germany in 2009. The 2010 representatives were Phindile Mangwana and Hunadi Mokgalaka. They are among 500 youths who have taken part in the programme since 1998.

During the tour, which takes place from October 16 to October 21, the 36 envoys - accompanied by 30 journalists - will attend lectures on sustainable consumption by the UN Environment Programme and Wuppertal Institute Collaboration Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production.
