BEE focus in BBQ awards

THIS year's Black Business Quarterly Awards will focus on the origin of black economic empowerment and the contributions it has made to black people.

This emerged in an interview with Faith Feni, senior project manager of BBQ.

BBQ is a quarterly black business magazine which celebrates and showcases the history of black icons and organisations which develop black businesses.

The BBQ annual awards were launched in 2002 to promote sustainable black business, as it honoured people and organisations at the forefront of developing black enterprise.

The awards cover 10 categories and are open to leaders of black-owned companies. They enhance the winners' profiles for future development.

"We are paying tribute to the role played by the Black Management Forum and the Black Economic Empowerment Commission," said Feni.

She said each member of the commission would be honoured with a token of appreciation.

Feni said that black business and transformation played a key role in the programmes of uplifting black communities.

"The awards make a difference despite negative reports on B-BBEE. Since the inception of the BEE policy, South Africa has witnessed the emergence of successful black-run businesses and young black leaders," she said.

Feni said the promotion of the BBQ awards contributed to skills and enterprise development.

Some of the awards' sponsors include Chuene Business Enterprises, South African Black Entrepreneurs Forum and Jaguar South Africa.
