Right people, right place, right time

BUSINESSES want to train and develop people while they are still employed so that they will be able to contribute to the companies' overall objectives.

This was revealed yesterday at a media briefing in Sandton, Johannesburg, by Human Capital Solutions in partnership with global talent management leader Lumesse.

"A lot of South African companies should move from the traditional way of doing things, pass the streamline phase, go beyond a progressive stage and fully engage in strategic value creation," said Jeremy Longley, Lumesse's Western Europe, Middle East and Africa director.

Lumesse has customers such as the Bank of China International, Deutsche Telekom and Heineken, among others.

A Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) Labour Market Survey of 2009 revealed a dire need for "talent management solutions in South African companies".

The global recession apparently led to a lot of businesses losing their competitive advantage through the retrenchment of talented and skilled workers.

"We want to focus on making sure that we spot the right people, place them in the right place at the right time for the companies' and individual's ' long-term benefit," said Puven Ramasamy of HR-Focus Holdings.

Ramasamy said it was important for business to be proactive in ensuring that people at the "right talent management should be a core business function instead of a mere support function".

He said 37percent of employees who left their companies said it was due to a lack of personaldevelopment.

Ramasamy added that the South African business environment was tight with regulatory and compliance restrictions which sometimes pose a challenge.

Attention to maintaining good corporate governance and rewarding diligent employees was the key, he said.

"We want to make opportunities available to all employees at all levels," said Ramasamy.
