Youth event goes back to basics

A YOUTH development event, which is part of youth month, is inviting girls and boys and their parents or guardians on Saturday between 8.30am and 3.30pm.

Lerato Mojaki of Bonafide, who are the event's organisers which is supported by Sowetan and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation, said this week that all youths were welcome to the event.

In the past, the organisation's youth development campaigns were aimed at nurturing responsible future leaders among boy children.

Music celebrities Slikour of the hip hop crew Skwatta Kamp, music conductor Bheki Nene and motivational speaker Mzi Kaka are expected to help inspire the youths.

"Many male youngsters are raised in environments where they lack quality adult male figures to look up to, and to draw wisdom and values from," Mojaki said.

"We believe that the culture of coaching and mentorship in our communities needs to be revived.

"So, we seek to restore these crucial youth development elements by going back to basics ... back to our roots ... and back to our African values."

The Long Walk's sub-theme is inspired by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu's profound observation about the growth of ideas, concepts, innovations and inventions: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step..."

The Long Walk will begin at Chaf Pozi at the famous Orlando Towers on the corner of Nicholas and Basil Khumalo streets.

It will then move on to Thema Street about 2,5km away, and turn left on to Chris Hani Road.

The walk will then move back to Orlando Towers.
