Dispute in steel sector

THE negotiation meeting between the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa, the employer federation representing the metal and engineering industry, and the sector's six trade unions held on Tuesday has ended in dispute.

Seifsa said yesterday that at the meeting, the facilitator continued the mediation process that commenced at the previous meeting on May 24.

"He spent time with the parties in an attempt to formulate a conceptual framework within which to move the negotiations forward.

"During this process, a list of 17 union demands were presented to the employer parties, including a reduction in the unions' wage demand from 20percent to 13percent," Seifsa said.

The employer parties indicated that they needed to evaluate the demands. Their wage increase offer of 4,1percent remained unchanged.

In response, the unions declared themselves to be in dispute with the employer parties and Seifsa.

Likewise, the employers declared a dispute against the unions and their members. The dispute will be dealt with in terms of the bargaining council's dispute resolution procedure.
